Currently, I am reading a book by Dr. Laura Schlessinger entitled Parenting by Proxy: Don’t Have Them if You Won’t Raise Them. If you don’t know or have heard Dr. Schlessinger, she is a conservative and a vocal critic of the liberal left. In this particular book, she consistently refers to God but writes it in the above format – G-d. It’s not a curse word, rather the exact opposite.
The Jews have long had the propensity to say some other designation for “God” instead of, well, “God.” One of the Ten Commandments has famously said, “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7).
So the Jews very early began using some word or designation to refer to God without using His name. For example, the Jews might use the term “Heaven” to refer to God. It is for this reason that the Jews early stopped reading “Jehovah” when they came to God’s name in the Old Testament. They would substitute the designation “Lord” instead of “God/Jehovah” which is why some translations read “LORD” with all capital letters.
So, Dr. Schlessinger’s use of “G-d” is in the same line of thought – don’t use God’s name lest you use it in vain and violate one of God’s commandments.
With due respect to Dr. Schlessinger and modern Jews who are trying not to disrespect God’s name – they are disrespecting God’s name. First of all, they are raising their own tradition to the level of God’s word. God revealed Himself to man as Jehovah – Genesis 2:4 and 6,701 more times in the Old Testament! If He had not wanted man to call Him “God”, then He would have/could have revealed Himself by some other name. God did not tell man not to use His name. He told man not to disrespect His name.

So they do not profit this people at all, declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:30-32).
So, the Jews would be better off allowing their Old Testament to lead them to Christ (Galatians 3:19). Then they would quit taking God’s name in vain.
