If we are to understand “missions,” we must first begin to understand God.
“Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
God is the source of perseverance and encouragement. Perseverance is the “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” In American idiom, it is “keeping on, keeping on.” God consistently walks through the gardens of our hearts, asking us, “Where are you?” (see Genesis 3:9).
Encouragement is “the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope.” It means to “cheer up or cheer on.” It comes from the Latin that means “to put heart back in.” There is a song we sing, “He’s still working on me, to make me what I ought to be. It took him just a week to make the moon and the stars, the sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars. How loving and patient He must be. ‘Cause He’s still working on me.” That’s the God of encouragement.

God is the God of perseverance – not giving up on us until we take our last breath. He is also the God of encouragement – strengthening us through His word until we cross the finish line.
