Hebrews 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

The book of Hebrews is an excellent book because it talks about the Excellency of Christ. It serves to reinforce our faith in Jesus Christ. Who is Jesus? Many know Him as the only begotten Son of God (John 3:16). The letter to the Hebrews shows us there are so much things in Jesus that show Him to be worthy of our worship. The epistle shows us the SUPREMACY of Christ.

The author lays down the supremacy of Christ in his opening introduction (v.1-3). He begins by declaring the infinite superiority of Christ giving emphasis to the following:

  1. He is God’s SON (v.2). Others were servants of God, but Christ is the Son of God.
  2. He is the HEIR (v.2). Heirship goes with Sonship. Whatever belongs to God also belongs to Christ, including all authority (Matthew 28:18).
  3. He is the CREATOR (v.2). While all things in this universe were created, Christ was the Creator. It implies He existed before all things; that He is from everlasting to everlasting.
  4. He is the EXACT IMPRINT of God’s nature (v.3). Man was only created in the image of God but Christ is of the same essence as God, possessing the same attributes, power, and divinity. The logical conclusion is that He is GOD: “And the Word was God” (John 1:1-3).
  5. He is the REDEEMER (v.3). It was the greatest work that Christ came to this world to do: to be the sacrificial lamb in order to save the world from its sin (John 1:29).
  6. He is EXALTED on high (v.3). Christ is here pictured as King Messiah seated at the right hand of God, a position no one else can occupy. There is no one who even comes close to the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

What about when compare to angels? Man is made a little lower than the angels (Psalm 8:5). Man has always been mesmerized by the thoughts of angels. Some even worshiped angels. The Colossian Christians were tempted to worship angels (Colossians 2:18). On two occasions, the apostle John was tempted to worship an angel (Revelations 19:10; 22:8). The Jehovah Witnesses deny Jesus is God; they say He is an angel. What does the writer of Hebrews has to say about this?

He wrote: “Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they” (v.4).

The name of Christ is more excellent than angels. Christ is BETTER than the angels. Note these points by the writer of Hebrews that show Jesus to be better than the angels:

  1. The NAME of Christ is more excellent than the angels (v.4). “Christ” means “Anointed”.
  2. God is the Son of God (v.5).
  3. Angels are commanded to Worship Christ (v.6).
  4. Angels are Created beings (v.7).
  5. Christ is God and King (v.8).
  6. God even called Christ God (v.8, 9).
  7. Christ is the Creator of heaven and earth while angels are created beings (v.10).
  8. Christ is Eternal (v.11, 12).
  9. Christ is Honoured by God above angels (v.13).
  10. Angels are servants (v.14).

We are commanded to know the Lord (Hebrews 8:11). This is exactly what the writer of this epistle wants us to do: Know The Lord! Knowing our Lord Jesus Christ will strengthen our faith in Him (Romans 10:17). Do you know your Lord?
