Where were you when the world stopped Turning?
For those of you old enough, where were you when JFK was assassinated? For those of you old enough, where were you when the space shuttle Challenger exploded? Where were you when the WTC was destroyed on 9/11/2001?
It was a new “day that will live in infamy.” Today, we’ll mark the 11th anniversary of that fateful day that changed so many lives and changed our nation in many ways. 2,975 people died on that day when Muslims hijacked several airplanes and crashed them into the WTC, the Pentagon, and one crashed into Shanksville, PA which was headed toward the White House or the Capitol building.
That day began for everyone just like Monday had been. That day, a couple on our mission team was planning to leave the U. S. and return to us with their new baby boy, Nathaniel, in Iasi, Romania. I was helping some Christians in Iasi deliver food supplies to homeless people living in an abandoned and condemned apartment building.
Death came that day irrespective of their political affiliation or religion. It did not matter if the person was wealthy or poor, a son, daughter, father, mother, uncle, aunt or grandparent. They died. Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:19-20: “For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same. As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is vanity. All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust.”
I’m sure we can all recall where we were that day when the world stopped turning. It stopped turning because we were nearly frozen in time – nothing else seemed to matter. What was most important was saving those who survived – rescuing those who were trapped and getting medical care to those who could still benefit from it.

Where will you be when the world stops turning? Will you be prepared? Living righteously, pure lives in Christ, worshipping in the church, walking by faith, confident in the hopes we have in Jesus Christ?
That day will take us unexpectedly but it doesn’t have to take us unprepared.
