Honesty is Always the Best Policy

A teenager was on his way to school one day, on foot, and found a couple of sacks made out of canvas. Opening the sacks, he discovered wads of cash inside! There was a total of $450,000 in cash! He returned the money to the Princeton Armored Services and received $1,000 reward. Unfortunately, he was disappointed with the reward. He expected to receive more. He lamented, “If I had to do it over again, I’d probably keep the money.”

The situation is, however, that God always knows when we are honest or dishonest. The Scriptures roundly condemn lying, dishonesty, cheating, stealing, etc. from beginning to end. Truth flows from the nature of God and when we are untruthful, we violate the nature of God. That’s why dishonesty is so wrong.

David took what rightfully belonged to another; in his case, it was the man’s wife. In response to David, through the prophet Nathan, God said, “It is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul. I also gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these! Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His sight?” (2 Samuel 12:7-9).

We despise the word of the Lord when we get greedy and want what rightfully belongs to another. But, when we are truthful and honest, even in the little things, God will bless us in larger and greater ways, as Jesus says in the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:21, 23).

Don’t be tempted to take what belongs to someone else. Stay faithful and God will see to your needs.
