Mothers Move Mountains
Exodus 2:1-10
Moses is mentioned in the Bible 852 times! He is the most significant, the most outstanding, the most important personage in the Old Testament and probably second only to Jesus in the entire Bible. Moses was, without a doubt, a great man. But it wasn’t his wife that was his foundation. It wasn’t a surprised mother-in-law either. Moses was great because he had a strong foundation that was laid by his mother – Jochebed.

PERCEPTION – Exodus 2:2
How could any mom not see the good in her child, her son or daughter? Jochebed did not see the danger that allowing the baby to live would bring to her. She did not see the heartache that he could cause. She saw good. She saw – literally the Hebrew says – that he was good.
Moms, what do you see in your son or daughter? Let me tell you right now, you need to see your child, first of all as a future Christian. You need to look at your child as a gift from God and know that God has something special in store for your son or daughter. She is a future follower of Jesus Christ. He is a future light in the world.
COURAGE – 2:2:
Consider the rest of verse 2. In the wake of a national law to kill all boys, to dump them into the Nile River, Moses’ mother “hid him” for three months. What courage! What faith! The Hebrew writer praises the faith and courage of Moses’ mother in Hebrews 11:23.
Oh, how we need mothers today who have courage. The courage to be selfless and the courage to be different. Our society is putting more and more pressure on mothers to think that being a Christian is old, out of date, and no longer worth anything. We need mothers with courage who will stand up to the culture – and even stand up to their own children sometimes when their behavior is foolish – and say, “No. You will not do that. Our family is a Christian family and you will not do that.”
PROTECTION – 2:3-4:
Let’s pick up with verse 3. I suppose Jochebed knew that Pharaoh’s daughter bathed in that area of the Nile and she prayed and planned for the woman to find her child. She prayed and planned for the woman to find her daughter and be moved by the compassion that is inherent in nearly every mother’s heart, to raise the boy and keep him safe. That is courage. And the courage led her to do what she could for his protection. Observe verse 4.

Moms need to protect their children from the world because what the world throws out is generally what the world throws up and it ain’t worth swallowing.
AVAILABLILITY – 2:7-9:
Mothers move mountains when they are available. We’ve seen where Jochebed sent Miriam to hide in the bulrushes and watch what happens with little baby Moses. In verse 7, when Miriam sees the Pharaoh’s daughter pull Moses out of the Nile, she speaks up and asks the daughter of their enemy: “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” The daughter said yes, so verse 8 – “The girl went and called the child’s mother.”
Mothers have to be available. When children cry, they need Momma’s shoulder to cry on. When they need help dealing with the world, Mommas need to be there for them.
When children are small and when children are big, they never outgrow the need to have Mom around – even if it is just a phone call away.
TEACHING – 2:10:
While Jochebed had Moses under her control and under her influence, she taught him that he was a Hebrew. She taught him that he descended from Abraham and she taught him how they ended up in Egypt. She taught him about God and the sin of idolatry.
I asked one of my elders when I was a youth minister twenty years ago when he first started worrying about his children. I expected him to say something like when they first got their driver’s license or when they left home. No, he said, “When they first went to kindergarten.” That shocked a young married man with no children. I responded, “Really? Why?” He said, “Because then, they were no longer under my and my wife’s sole influence. Now, they will be under some else’s influence.” That’s exactly what Jochebed does with Moses. You teach them all you can while you can, knowing that someone else is also going to be influencing them very soon.
Moms, your job is hard. It is time consuming and will drain your energy. If you don’t have a husband at home, it will be more time-consuming and more draining. You need to utilize other family members as much as possible.
But if we want our sons and daughters to be the type of person Moses was, we need to be the type of mothers Jochebed was – perceptive, courageous, protective, available, and a teacher.
