WHO IS GOD? Verses 1, 3, 7
When we discuss the nature of God, we usually use predicates – “God is holy”, “God is love”, “God is truth”, “God is all-powerful, all-knowing, etc.” But the Jewish mind often thought in concrete terms.
Who is God? Verse 1 says “O God, you are my God.” My God. Until I feel and believe that God is a personal God, that is my God, I will not be satisifed in Him. Consider the personal aspect of the crucifixion from Galatians 2:20.
According to the psalmist, God is a personal God, his God. He is full of power and glory. He is good, full of kindness, mercy, grace, and patience. And, he is the Lord of Hosts ready to help.
HOW DOES THE AUTHOR FEEL ABOUT GOD?
In verse 3, the author says that God’s “steadfast love” is better than life. If we ever reach the understanding that knowledge and goodness of God is more important than life itself, then we will be content in our relationship with Him and we will depend less on physical things.
Observe verse 5. The author’s foundation is God. God is his all. How do we feel? If God were not in our life, where would we be? In the shadow of God’s wings, the psalmist will sing for joy (verse 7). This is a picturesque way of describing God’s defenses. God does not have wings, obviously. But just as a hen covers her chicks with her wings, so God will cover us with His protection.
Observe verse 8. To whom do you cling? Who gives you psychological comfort? Who calms your nerves and steadies your grip? If our hope is in material things and they are destroyed, what will we do? But who can steal God from us? God does not change like a shadow – He is stable and dependable.

THE REACTIONS OF OTHERS
In verses 9-10, the author speaks about the reaction of others. The nature of God (infinite love) is a blessing for the righteous and the same nature (infinite justice) is a curse for the wicked.
As a result, the author says, “those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth; they shall be given over to the power of the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals.”
The author recognized the gifts of God and praised Him for them. Others rejected the proof for God and finally, they ended in the “depths of the earth.”
Where will we end? The path we choose today will determine the destiny we experience tomorrow.
