Our Living Stone 1 Peter 2:2-10
When it comes to building a structure, there is often some form of ceremony for the beginning of construction. Usually, this takes the form of a “ground-breaking” ceremony, and during that groundbreaking there is often the laying of a cornerstone. The purpose of that cornerstone being laid is to signify the origin of whatever structure that it is. The cornerstone is the start of something.
More than that, being the first stone, every brick or stone in the structure will be set in relation to that cornerstone. The cornerstone is the example for the pieces that follow it. The cornerstone determines the position of the entire structure.
John 1:1-5 says many things about “The Word,” which is Jesus Christ. The Word was in the beginning. All things were made through The Word. The Word gave life/origin. All of these descriptions match our definitions of a cornerstone. So, based on John 1:1-5 we know that Jesus Christ is our cornerstone.
Keeping this in mind, we look back to Genesis 3, to the fall of man. Here, we see Adam failing to protect his wife and failing to protect the garden. He allowed Satan to bring sin into a perfect world. Shortly afterwards, in verse 15, we see the first prophecy about Christ. God says to the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” One day, Christ would do what Adam failed to do. He would protect his bride.

Fast forward to 1 Peter 2. At this point, we know that Jesus is our cornerstone. He sacrificed His life, yet he defeated death, gaining victory over Satan, sin, and death. He has become the boulder that crushed the head of the serpent for good. 1 Peter 2:4-5 says, “As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
Just as Jesus is the living cornerstone, we are called to be living stones, building blocks for His church, built on the solid foundation of Christ. We have been chosen from the beginning, called out of the darkness that Satan brought into the world, and called into the marvelous light that God brought into this world through His Son, that we may proclaim the excellencies of Him (1 Pet. 2:9).
Jesus Christ is our cornerstone. In Him all things were made. We are made in His likeness, to be a holy priesthood, a spiritual house. Once we were not a people, but, because of Him, we are God’s people. Once we did not receive mercy, but now we receive mercy (1 Pet. 2:10).
Don’t reject Him (1 Pet. 2:7). Believe in Him (1 Pet. 2:6).
