Instrumental music in the Old Testament

1) In the Old Testament we are specifically told the Jewish people used instrumental music to praise God.
2) In fact, there are about 20 different musical instruments mentioned in the Old Testament.
a) Some of these instruments can be classified as “stringed” instruments.
b) Others fall into the category of “wind” instruments.
c) We also find “percussion” instruments in the Old Testament.
3) I am going to cover each of these three categories, starting with stringed instruments in the TO.
a) Ps. 150:4 says “praise God with stringed instruments” (i.e. the whole family of stringed instruments).
b) Under the Old Testament stringed instruments were specifically permitted for worshipping God.
4) One of the stringed instruments we read about in the Old Testament (the asor) had ten strings.
5) This instrument is mentioned three times in the Old Testament (Ps. 33:2; 92:3; 144:9).
6) Another stringed instrument (kathros) seems to have been something like a lyre.
7) This instrument is mentioned in Dan. 3:5, 7, 10, 15.
8) A third type of stringed instrument (kinnor) is the most often mentioned stringed instrument in the OT
9) This third instrument is found 42 times in the Old Testament.
a) This instrument is the one known as “David’s harp” in some of our translations.
b) 1 Sam. 16:23 says David played this harp with his “hand.”
10) Ps. 81:2 refers to this instrument – READ. This instrument made a “pleasant” sound.
11) This verse describes the sound made by this stringed instrument (“David’s harp”).
12) This “sweet sound” was used for festivals (Isa. 5:12) and state occasions (2 Sam. 6:5), not mourning (Ps. 137:2).

11) When the ark was transferred (2 Sam. 6:15) this instrument was used.

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS.

1) One percussion instrument (mena anim) was something like a loud, metal rattle. 2 Sam. 6:5.
2) Bells on the lower hem of priestly garments (Ex. 28:33-34; 39:25-26).
3) We read about a percussion instrument played by women (the “toph” or “tof”). Ex. 15:20.
4) Two types of cymbals in Ps. 150.
5) In the Old Testament, instrumental music to praise God WAS RIGHT!
