Jesus’ Covenant

Yesterday, we reviewed some points from God’s covenant made with Noah in Genesis 9:8-17. We considered the basis of the covenant as Noah’s response to God’s command. The substance of the covenant included a host of blessings God promised both Noah and his sons and future generations. The sign of that covenant was the rainbow.

Now let’s turn our attention to the new covenant…

The apostle Peter warns us that just as God destroyed the world with water in the days of Noah, so God will destroy the entire physical universe with fire (2 Peter 3). To put it another way, one day, God will take that bow off His wall and will wield it once more, once and for all, against Satan and those who do not know God and who do not obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ (2 Thess. 1:7-9). To avoid that destruction, we must be in a covenant relationship with Christ.

The basis of the covenant is the blood of Christ and our faithful response to it. When Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, He took the fruit of the vine and said, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many” (Mark 14:24). A significant part of the NT is about our faithful response to that sacrifice. Hebrews deals with the New Covenant of Christ more, far more, than any other writer. There, we see that through the new covenant, God will write His laws in our hearts and in our minds (10:16) – thus we see the necessity for obedience, just as with Noah.

The substance of the covenant is the blessings that are available in Him. For a long list, see Eph. 1:3-14.

The sign of the covenant would be the resurrection of Christ. This event is the proof of God’s faithfulness to His promises. Observe Hebrews 13:20: “Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Just as surely as God brought the flood on the world, so God will destroy this world with fire. We need to be members of Christ’s covenant community in order to survive.
