We are under two weeks until our nation celebrates the Thanksgiving holiday. Christians have so much for which to be thankful, it would take more than 365 days to adequately express to God our thanks. Let’s meditate on Psalm 100 for just a moment…
“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”
A lack of thankfulness is one attitude that God simply abhors. In Paul’s description of the Gentile world without God, he says, “when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful” (Rom. 1:21).
The psalmist gives us three reasons why we need to be thankful to God. First, our lives ought to be expressed in thanksgiving to God, because “the Lord is good.” God’s goodness works in our lives providentially (cf. Gen. 50:20). Paul said it this way, “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Rom. 8:28). God’s goodness is seen in that He “gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14:17).
We also need to be thankful to God because “His mercy is everlasting.” God’s mercy worked together with His justice in sending Christ to the cross for us. “According to His abundant mercy, He hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3). Each of us were lost in sin and still fall short of His glory (Rom. 3:23) but His mercy allowed us to be born again and become new (2 Cor. 5:17). In God’s mercy, He sent Jesus. In God’s mercy, He makes us alive again through baptism. In God’s mercy, He continues to provide forgiveness, benefits, and care.

Finally, our thanksgiving ought to be continually heaven-directed because “His truth endureth to all generations.” Without the Word of God, we would have no light to guide us (Psa. 119:105) nor would we have the faith to sustain us since faith comes by hearing that Word (Rom. 10:17). The words Jesus speaks are spirit and life (John 6:63).
As we enter into the holiday season and express our thanksgiving, let us remember the reasons we need to be thankful to the Giver of every good and perfect gift: the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endureth to all generations.
Jesus is the reason for the thanksgiving season!
