Jesus – the Lord of Solving Problems Matthew 8:14-17

Matthew 8 is early in Christ’s ministry. He has healed Peter’s mother-in-law of a fever. That evening, many demon-possessed sick people were brought to Jesus and He cast out the evil spirits and healed all who were sick. Matthew quotes this verse from Isaiah 53:4 but Matthew changes it:

“This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “He Himself took our infirmities and carried away our diseases.” “Infirmities” and “diseases” are how modern translations translate these two Greek words. The word “disease,” in the Greek, means “weakness.” while “sickness” means “sickness, disease, or illness.”

Why do you suffer? Have you (or are you) suffering from feelings of guilt? Worry and anxiety? Fears? Depression? Anger? Sexual temptations or other addictions? Grief? Divorce? Abortion? Bitterness? Eating disorders? Envy? Forgiveness? Loneliness? Money-management problems? Chronic pain? Problems in parenting? Prejudice? Stress? Workaholism?

All the problems, I believe, can be narrowed down into three categories, corresponding to the three-parts of which man is composed. Man is body, soul, and spirit. Subsequently, our problems can be categorized as spiritual, emotional or mental, and physical. Jesus is the Lord at solving our problems as we turn each of these over to Him and His leadership and allow Him to take our infirmities and carry our diseases on His body on the cross.

Let’s look at these three areas in turn and let’s start with the most important – the spiritual.

JESUS IS LORD OF SOLVING OUR SPIRITUAL PROBLEMS:

Jesus resolves our spiritual problems by bridging the gap between us and God. Consider the apostle Paul and the gap between him and God that needed to be bridged – 1 Timothy 1:12-16. Once we are reconciled with God through Jesus Christ, then really, that is the solution to our worry and fears. If God will save us from our sins, we know that He will also save us from problems in this world.

JESUS IS THE LORD OF SOLVING OUR MENTAL / PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS:

How does Jesus help us solve these psychological problems we face? Well, we would approach it from different perspectives, depending on what problem it is but ultimately we’re going to come around to trust. Trust God will take care of our problems – those we cannot control. We will get through it. We will overcome.
Look at Philippians 4:4-8. Rejoice in your relationship with Christ. Be gentle to everyone. Do not worry. Be thankful for what you do have. Think positive thoughts.

When it comes to solving our psychological problems, we have to better train ourselves to trust God and follow His guidance (Proverbs 3:5-6).

JESUS IS THE LORD OF SOLVING OUR PHYSICAL PROBLEMS:

Consider Job’s lament in 19:17-22. To the degree that problems need physical, medical attention, to that degree I need to seek medical support. We do not want to downplay or minimize the need and the role that physicians or even psychiatrists can play in our lives.

But beyond that, if we are still suffering from physical problems, how does Jesus help us with that?

For one thing, Jesus teaches us to be patient. Consider Paul’s words in Romans 8:18-25.

Second, we can look forward to the changing of our bodies. First, look back at Job’s words in Job 19:23-26. Job was looking forward to a better life and a better body. Paul writes in Philippians 3:21 that when Christ comes again, He will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory.

Take a look also at 1 Corinthians 15:42-45.

God has thus so designed this world so that we are challenged in various ways to see if we will follow those two great commandments: love God supremely and love our fellow man sacrificially. When all is said and done – that’s what God expects. This world is designed perfectly to challenge each one of us uniquely. You have different struggles than I have. You are being tested and challenged differently than I am. But God will not challenge us more than we can endure – 1 Corinthians 10:13.

When you are suffering, read and study God’s word. Then pray for patience, wisdom, and healing.
