Jesus was not content to sit around and just protect the truth. He was aggressive, confronting even the most hostile with the thought provoking news he had to share. He deliberately tried to stir up the thinking process of those who heard him.
Consider Matthew 17:24-26 – “When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?” He *said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?” When Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are exempt.”
In Matthew 18:12, Jesus challenged: “What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?” This gives us some idea of how Jesus felt toward the lost.
Again, in Matthew 21:28, Jesus posed this question: “But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go work today in the vineyard.’”

For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.”
