Improper Jokes
Recently, I was flipping through a sermon illustration book. I came across a joke, the punch line of which dealt with adultery. I have mulled over that. If you have been the victim of adultery, I’m sure it is not a joke. If you have tried to put your marriage back together after having been unfaithful, I’m sure it is not a joke. Adultery is no laughing matter. Neither are any other sexual improprieties.
Several years ago, it dawned on me that we ought not to be laughing at jokes that promote, in a positive way, sin. Sin damns a soul to hell. Why would we laugh at that? If you notice, there are t-shirts that use sin to make you laugh. Children wear t-shirts that promote rebellion against parents and/or society. What is funny about that?
Why should/would we laugh at jokes which poke fun at alcoholics? If you struggle with alcoholism or you have a spouse who struggles or even if you have a spouse who died from cirrhosis of the liver, alcoholism is not funny. Jokes and/or t-shirts that make light of pride and arrogance are not funny, either. If God condemns anything, He condemns pride. And we want to laugh at that?

I might as well wear a t-shirt that says, “I find murder funny.” Or “It tickles my funny bone when a woman is raped.” Is that funny? No. It is not. Neither is any other “joke” about sin.
I love to laugh as much as the next person and use humor frequently in my sermons. But some stories/jokes just are not appropriate – in any setting. Bible class teachers, preachers, and Christians in general ought to seriously consider what we find funny. If we can honestly say God would not find it funny, we ought not to find it funny either.
“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37).
