Juan E. Méndez

You may be surprised at the new direction the pro-choice lobby is going. The United Nations has long been a proponent of the progressive agenda. They have a special “rapporteur” on torture – an Argentinean named Juan E. Méndez. Observe his title – “special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

He recently sent a report to the General Assembly on torture. “The Committee against Torture has repeatedly expressed concerns about restrictions on access to abortion and about absolute abortion bans as violating the prohibition on torture and ill treatment.” As we have pointed out before, many state legislatures are more conservative than Washington politicians and have begun banning abortion at various stages.

Most recently – last week – the governor of North Dakota, Jack Dalrymple, signed the most restrictive (i.e., most protective for unborn babies) bill into law. If you can hear a fetal heartbeat, an abortion would be illegal. That happens around six weeks. Just because a baby has genetic flaws, you cannot abort it. See – don’t give up on the moral direction of our country just yet. Science – as usual – is catching up with the Bible. More and more people are beginning to realize that science supports the idea that life begins at conception.

But now the UN is trying to define abortion restrictions as “torture”. As Wesley Smith writes in “Defining Torture Down” in The Weekly Standard (April 1/8, pg. 22): “Just imagine the New York Times headlines reporting on his [Méndez] visits to, say, states that impose waiting periods before abortions: “Torture in 26 U. S. States!”

God abhors those who shed innocent blood (Proverbs 6:17) and there’s not much blood more innocent that those who are still in their mother’s womb and totally defenseless. If these people want to know what real torture is, they need to meditate on the Bible’s definition of hell.

When I did a study on the ethics of water-boarding and torture about a year ago, I looked at Matthew 18:34-35 in a different light. It is at the conclusion of a parable about forgiveness. Listen to it from the NASV: “And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.” Did you notice that? Jesus said God the Father – the God of love – will torture in hell those who do not forgive from their hearts.

Hell is eternal torture. Those who provide abortions and those who practice abortions – even 14 year old girls who have made a “mistake” – are piling up wrath for the day of wrath (cf. Romans 2:5) and flirting with God’s coming torture on sinners. We, as Christians, need to be committed to the sanctity of unborn life and teach and preach it fervently. We also need to teach and practice forgiveness to all those who have committed abortion. We also need to be prepared to help them emotionally, fiancially, spiritually, and so forth. Repentance and salvation from hell is still available for them. They don’t need to add one sin (abortion) to another sin (fornication).

“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31). “But thanks be to God for His indescribable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15).
