Light and Truth Through the Resurrection

Light and Truth Through the Resurrection

Psalm 43

We are considering Psalm 43 through the lens of the resurrection of Christ. We meditated on the first two verses yesterday. Now, read verses 3-4:

STANZA TWO – LIGHT AND TRUTH LEAD TO WORSHIP – 43:3-4:

“O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your dwelling places. Then I will go to the altar of God, To God my exceeding joy; And upon the lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.”

In verse 3, the author calls on God for light and truth. He knows he needs to be led. Light, here, is a synonym for truth. It means “guidance” through the darkness of night, through the darkness of confusion and ignorance.

The light and truth, the author says, will lead him to the “holy mountain.” This “holy mountain” is a poetic reference to the hill on which the temple was built. It was the place where men worshiped God. It is God’s holy sanctuary; it is where His presence can be enjoyed.

It is there, at God’s holy hill, that the author finds his reason for being – worshiping God. Observe in verse 4, “I will go to the altar of God, To God my exceeding joy.” Joy is the emotion that saturates our worship: joy for the blessings God provides. Joy for the vindication and deliverance that God provides.

Now, what about the sentiments of this stanza in the light of the resurrection of Christ? The cross and resurrection of Christ are the epitome of God’s light and truth. In so many ways, the cross and the resurrection answer the “big” questions of life:

Where did I come from? God made you in His image – look at the cross. He wants you to be with Him forever. Jesus rose from the dead.

Why am I here? To glorify God here so you can glorify God forever – look at the cross. He wants you to be with Him forever. Jesus rose from the dead.

Where am I going? To be with God forever. Look at the cross. He wants you to be with Him in heaven. Jesus rose from the dead.

Why is there evil in the world? God allows man the right to choose. Look at the cross. But God wants you with Him forever. Jesus rose from the dead.

Does God love me? God loves every single person. Look at the cross. God wants you with Him forever. Jesus rose from the dead.

And when you understand the impact and the importance of this resurrection in the plan of God, you have to make it a part of your own life! It is the power of the resurrected Christ that forgives us of our sins through baptism (Colossians 2:12). It is the power of the resurrected Christ that gives substance to our hope for a better life! The things we experience now and the things we will experience in heaven result from the resurrection of Christ and, experiencing that joy, we have to worship God! We worship because Jesus rose from the dead!

The resurrection of Christ is the culminating act of God’s light, God’s truth and that event leads and guides our worship until we die or Jesus comes again.

We pray to God through the resurrected Christ.

We sing to God because of the resurrected Christ.

We give to God out of love for the resurrected Christ.

We observe the Supper of the resurrected Christ.

We study the word given us by the resurrected Christ.

The resurrection motivates us to worship God in light and in truth.
