…and times are good, most of us can accept God’s Will. But what happens when things are not going so well? What is our attitude toward God’s Will then? Does our attitude change toward the Lord’s church and spiritual things when life throws us a curve?
It’s somewhat ironic that some will complain that their life is so bogged-down with problems they just don’t have time to think of “spiritual things.” Then, at other times, they are so involved with enjoying the blessings of life, they forget all about the One from whom all blessings flow.
All of us know that in order to have problems in this life, all you have to do is live. Becoming a Christian does not automatically erase all dilemmas from one’s life. In fact, the Bible strongly indicates that becoming a faithful Christian will invite *unpleasant* circumstances that would not appear if we chose not to be a faithful Christian. Consider: “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and…a man’s enemies will be those of his own household” (Matthew 10:34-56). “Woe unto you when all men speak well of you…” (Luke 6:26). “Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake” (Matthew 5:11). Jesus never painted Christianity as a life of ease and prosperity — that comes after this life (Romans 8:17-18).

Look at what Jesus tolerated while on earth — the insults, emotional, and physical persecution. How was He able to endure? He kept His mind on the glory that awaited Him on the other side of His cross (Hebrews 12:2-4). That’s how we endure our cross, by following His example, i.e. by keeping our mind on the glory that awaits us on the other side of our cross. Doing His Heavenly Father’s Will cost Jesus His life on the cross (Phil. 2:8); doing God’s Will caused Stephen to be stoned to death (Acts 7:54-60); doing God’s Will caused Paul untold suffering, on top of living with a “thorn in the flesh” which he asked Jesus to remove, but Jesus refused. With these, and many other examples in the New Testament (Hebrews 11:30-40), why *in the world* do we think life is to be “wine and roses” when we give our life over to do the Will of God? Why do we feel so justified in forsaking worship to our Creator at the least bit of discomfort?
Christians don’t go out looking to be persecuted. However, error has always opposed the truth, and it will be that way till the end of all things. Therefore, if we are living in Truth, opposition will find us. We must be faithful unto death in order to receive the crown of life (Revelation 2:10). Faithful when things are going well, and faithful when they are not. Looking at the generic picture of Christianity in the world today, there will be many surprises on Judgment Day.
