Modern-Day Miracles?

Miracles were sprinkled in the OT. They reach a peak in the ministry of Jesus. But once the Gospel starts spreading throughout the Mediterranean world in the book of Acts, they start diminishing in importance. Once Paul starts writing his letters, we only see scattered references to them in Romans, Galatians, and a few other places. Only in 1 Corinthians do miracles take a central role, in chapters 12-14 primarily, and that’s because some Christians were puffed up over being able to speak in foreign languages over those who could not.

Once Pentecostalism got traction in the last century, belief in modern-day miracles has spread throughout the religious world, including the Lord’s church. What the Bible teaches on miracles is easy to grasp. A new book from the pen of Dave Miller helps the student to grasp what the Bible teaches: Modern-Day Miracles? Do Miracles, Tongue-Speaking, & Holy Spirit Baptism Occur Today?

It is not a long book, only 80 pages. But it is dense, with lots of biblical passages and illustrations to help the student gain a deeper insight into the word of God on this important topic. Miller has an important chart on pages 10-11 which show examples from Scripture that illustrate the purpose of miracles were to confirm the message of God. I have not seen such a chart anywhere else. He also provides a chart which sets 1 Corinthians 12-14 alongside Ephesians 4 in a discussion of the cessation of miraculous gifts. I have not seen this type of chart before either.

Miller provides questions at the end of each chapter which makes it ideal for the classroom setting and he provides the answers at the end of the book, to facilitate the discussion of the questions. As usual, Miller cites numerous sources to support his studies and there are 88 footnotes if anyone needs to study further.

The Bible student would benefit from Miller’s discussion of miracles, in particular, 1 Corinthians 13 and “that which is perfect” and Ephesians 4. What miracle, after the creation, is not associated with a spokesman from God – a prophet, an apostle, or Jesus Himself? The purpose of miracles was to confirm the word; once the word is confirmed, miracles do not serve His purposes any more. If God wanted more and more people to be healed, He would have made it as easy to heal as He has called us to share the Gospel.

This book will help you in your studies. The apologeticspress.org website sells it for $6 so it would be easy to use it in Bible classes – teens, young adults, college age, as well as adults – or to share with someone who is confused on the subject.
