I am praying persistently for the Lord to send good rain to those parts of Australia that need it. NSW is over 90% in drought. Or I pray again and again for those I’ve mentioned eternity to during this week. But some might ask: “Isn’t praying once sufficient? Or, “Don’t you think God has heard you?” Others suggest: “Isn’t that the ‘meaningless repetition’ that Jesus talked about?”
It’s certainly repetition, but meaningless repetition? Not at all. When Jesus warned us off meaningless repetition, Matthew 6:7, he went on to speak of those who pile up words just to be sure God hears. But persistently repeating a request in prayer, in faith – especially in private prayer – is a totally different thing. And how many times would thanking or praising God be meaningless? Would you consider a sister praying every night for your growth to be meaningless repetition? The reason we persist in prayer is because God has commanded us to pray often and repeatedly. Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 1:3; 4:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Praying for the same thing over and over again, when done in faith, might actually indicate that (1) you’re not trying to impress others; (2) you’re not growing tired of praying; and (3) you’ve no doubt at all God hears you. God is always listening and wants you to keep asking in faith because of the Father-child relationship we have. You love Him and He loves you. We believe, so we keep asking – aware that our Father loves to hear from us.
Remember the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8? You must read it. The parable ends with:

“Will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
Here Jesus connects prayer and faith. Will God delay long in answering us? Time is not an issue with God. But He does give us plenty of time to ponder and pray: “Thy will be done.” Then ask again, and trust and pray some more! Turn your faith in God to prayer to God. And do it repeatedly. Without ceasing. Be a God-botherer!!
