Pray like you mean it

A Tale of Two Sisters

They are not sisters physically but spiritually. This is also not a “tale” in the fictitious sense. It is not a myth, a legend, or a parable. It is, in fact, a true story. And it happened right here at the Swartz Creek church of Christ. Let me share it with you with the hope that it will encourage you in your efforts to spread the gospel.

Let me start with “sister A,” whose name is Janee. Janee and her husband, Kirk, are in the “millennial” age group and they looked around at the church and saw a need for an outreach to that group. We had some individuals and couples in that group but they were not organized. So, Janee spoke to some of our deacons about starting a Bible class and fellowship group for them and then she started praying. She prayed and prayed and prayed.

Keep that image in your mind, of a Christian praying in her closet, as we continue the tale. Within the past 2-3 years, each year, we have had two or more individuals or couples in that age group who have either been baptized, moved into the area, or otherwise placed membership. One of those deacons has shared with me that the “young professionals” class averages 20 (with three babies among the couples!) with 60 different individuals having been in the class (including visitors) since its inception. The class also enjoys fellowship outside the class.

Now for “sister B,” whose name is Sara. Sara’s family are Christians for a few generations and Sara also became a Christian in her youth. Sara made choices that took her away from Christ. She fell in love with a man out of state, moved in with him, and had a child. But her family (physical and spiritual) did not give up on Sara and Sara did not renounce her faith in Christ. Sara moved back to the area. When the young professionals class was started, Sara and her boyfriend were invited to join them.

As Sara’s spirit was strengthened through Bible study, she began moving back toward Christ. She influenced her boyfriend to set a wedding date, to join me for pre-marital counseling, and to study the Bible relative to the plan of salvation. (Remember, Janee is praying in the background!) After a month of study, the boyfriend / fiancé realized the two needed to get married (before the “official wedding ceremony” scheduled for February) in order to be right with God. Within the context of our study of the plan of salvation, he was recently baptized, Sara was restored, and Satan lost two more. Plus, that little boy will now grow up with both parents being Christians.

A tale of two sisters. Find inspiration in Janee’s example. Pray like you mean it. Find encouragement from Sara’s and Josh’s example. There are still people with soft hearts who will respond to the doctrine of Christ if it is presented in patience, love, kindness, and humility.
