We often think we can sin in hiding and in secret and it will not affect us. Fifty years ago (1963), Richard Eggers used a fake dime at a laundry mat while a sheriff in Carlisle, Iowa looked on. Eggers had to spend two days in jail and paid $50 in a fine.
Now – 49 years later – Eggers was working for a Wells Fargo bank in Des Moines, Iowa and they found out about his “criminal” record. Federal regulation prohibits them from employing someone with a history of financial crimes. So, Eggers was fired. Fired for a 49-year-old $.10 crime!
In Numbers 32:23, the families of Reuben and Gad wanted to settle on the eastern side of the Jordan River while the rest of Israel was to settle on the west side of the river. Moses and the Israelites were afraid that the Reubenites and Gadites would just sit out of helping Israel take over Canaan and eventually would turn to idolatry.
The Reubenites and the Gadites insisted they would help as they should. Then, Moses told them: “If you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.” We cannot sin against God with impunity.
If you are struggling with a sin, a secret, private sin, it will come around one day and hurt you. Find a Christian friend to whom you can confess that sin and before whom you can be held accountable. Richard Eggers’s example shows us that you cannot hide sin – even a $.10 sin.
