S. O. S.

Those three letters do not actually stand for anything. Samuel Morse invented the telegraph which has allowed communication to occur over wires, long distances. The system is very simple; it’s based on an on/off system. Morse devised a code consisting of dots and dashes. Dots are a brief “on,” while dashes are an extended “on.” Every letter of the alphabet has its own combination of dots and dashes.

A discussion came about as to how to send a distress signal, domestically and internationally, using Morse code. After much debate, it was decided that three dots (S), followed by three dashes (O), and then three dots (S) would not be misunderstood.

Morse code officially ended as the official and international language of distress in 1997, replaced by satellite-based electronic systems. Incidentally, “mayday” comes from the French m’aidez, “help me.” Yet, the military still maintains Morse code capability in case of emergency with those billion-dollar satellites. The last I read, the army trains 2,800 soldiers to become proficient in Morse code.

God is a God of communication. God calls on mankind, whether Israel or foreign nations, to know that He is the LORD God dozens of times. God communicated with Adam and Eve, in a way that God believed to be understandable. He gave Israel the law of Moses and expected Israel to know that law and obey that law.

Jesus stepped on the scene and continued the Father’s focus on knowing the word of God and doing it. In the famous text of John 8:32, Jesus said, “you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Jesus teaches us, there, that “truth” is knowable and it is outside of our own minds (It is objective). He also said that truth can make us free.

The whole NT is based on the premise that God has communicated with mankind, that man can understand God’s message, and that mankind is obligated to do / fulfill God’s message. Paul wrote: “do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Eph. 5:17).
