1) Let’s begin with 1 Sam. 3:11 – READ
2) God predicated that He was going to shock people in Israel.
3) Verses 12-13 provides more specific insight about what was going to happen – READ
a) Eli had two sons and he “restrained them not.”
b) 1 Sam. 2-3 shows us that God pays close attention to what fathers do.
4) Prov. 22:15 says “foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child but the rod of correction drives it out.”
5) Eli’s sons excelled in foolishness and sin.
6) These boys had seen their father serve as high priest.
7) Let’s back up just a bit to see what is said just prior to 1 Sam. 3:11.
8) 1 Sam. 2:34 – READ
a) Eli was going to be punished and punished severely.
b) God said this high priest was going to lose both of his sons.
c) Verses 31-33 show that Eli would face other negative consequences – READ
9) Verse 32 says others in the nation of Israel would be blessed, but this man’s family would not.
10) More catastrophes are described in verse 33.
11) God gave a reason for these terrible promises in verse 30 – READ
a) Eli took this father test and he failed.
b) Let’s look at verse 29 – READ
12) This father allowed his children to be more important than God.
13) Other verses specifically describe how this was done.
14) Let’s continue moving backwards through the text, looking now at verse 22 – READ

18) Verse 15 says the servant came for the meat, sometimes before the fat was burned as an offering – READ
19) Getting meat in this way would have allowed Eli’s sons to roast it.
20) When the servant of the boys came, he was not very nice – verses 16 – READ
21) Verse 17 says God was paying close attention to what these boys were doing – READ
22) Eli did say a little something to his sons about what they were doing – verses 22-25a – READ
23) The end of verse 25 says the boys did not listen and God was “minded to slay them.”
24) Deut. 21:18-21 says there were steps Eli could have taken.
25) This father did not act; he seems to have had the attitude that someone else (God) would deal with things.
a) Eli shows that a father’s influence can have a profound effect for good or bad.
b) Eli chose to have a weak influence; he failed to “restrain his sons” and God got angry.
2) The story of Eli tells dads they have some very serious responsibilities.
3) Fathers have a great impact on their children and families and they need to strive to be a good influence.
