Sermons from our Favorite Songs “Break my Heart”

Thomas Watson wrote that humility is like the lead in the net that keeps the soul down when it is rising through pride. Contentment is like the cork which keeps the heart up when it is sinking through discouragement.

Humility, especially in the face of God, is the subject of this song we are considering. The title is “Break My Heart.”

THE SONG:

    Break my heart, dear Lord
    Tear the barriers down
    Show me in convicting tears
    The glory of your crown
    My heart is hard,
    My soul so weak
    The ways of evil
    Cut so deep
    I need You Lord
    To come inside
    And gently break my heart.
    My sin is great,
    But I can see
    The glory set for me
    Show me Father
    Where to start
    And gently break my heart.
    My heart is hard,
    My soul so weak
    The ways of evil
    Cut so deep

THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMILITY:

Humility is not necessarily something you are born with. It is something you are taught and/or learn in life but it is a choice. God, through the prophet Zephaniah, told Israel: “Seek the Lord, All you humble of the earth Who have carried out His ordinances; Seek righteousness, seek humility” (2:3).

Our stubborn will is the issue: refusing to do God’s commandments or refusing to do God’s commandments God’s way. The matter of Bible authority, or how does God authorize us to do things, is a very serious matter and we must have the humility to submit our hearts to God’s commandments. We do not have the right to do what God has not authorized us to do. The very essence of a commandment is that it requires obedience to that commandment and anything else is not authorized.

This humility is seen in light of His glorious crown, as the song says. Jesus is God in the flesh. Let’s take a walk through the Gospel of John and see the humility of Jesus Christ. Let’s read 5:19, 30; 8:28; 12:40; 14:10, 24.

HUMILITY COMES BY ACCEPTING THE GUIDANCE OF THE LORD:

We might pray that the Lord would come in and gently break our hearts, but humility is a choice. It is something we choose to do as Paul writes in Ephesians 4:2. When it comes to God, it means that we put God’s desires above our own. That’s Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, “Not my will but thine be done” (Luke 22:42).

There are a half-dozen verses in the NT that emphasize the importance of humility, having a “broken heart” before the God of heaven: Philippians 2:3; Colossians 3:12.

Speaking of the Word, let’s look together at James 1:21-22. Notice how James sets this idea of humility in the context of our relationship to the word of God. We are to receive that word with “humility,” recognizing that God is holy and wise and He knows what is best. Then we do the word and not just be a “listener” or a “hearer.”

THE GLORY SET FOR US MOTIVATES TO HUMILITY:

“My sin is great, But I can see, the glory set for me.” Why did Jesus keep His heart humble before God? Because Jesus knew that He had been glorified before He came to earth and He was looking forward to receiving that same glory. Take a look at John 17:5 and Hebrews 12:1-3.

We, too, will be honored if we die faithful to Jesus Christ. Glory. Honor. Eternal life (Rom. 2:7). A crown of righteousness (2 Tim. 4:8). What do we have to do to wear that crown? Humbly submit to carrying the cross of obedience, just as Jesus did.

The song continues: “My heart is hard, My soul so weak The ways of evil Cut so deep.” If we want to please God, we’ve got to soften our hearts. We cannot have hard hearts and obedient lives (Isa. 66:2). That’s the heart we need to have: humble, contrite, and trembling at God’s word. Only then can we expect the prayer/song to be fulfilled: “I need You Lord To come inside And gently break my heart.”

Seek humility if you wish to be honored. First the cross. Then the crown.
