Hypnotism

While we were students at Freed-Hardeman, a hypnotist came to campus for some entertainment (called “stage hypnosis”). Rachel and I were in the audience. The hypnotist told the audience that if they wanted to be hypnotized, they could be. Rachel was hypnotized. This hypnotist had the students do some funny things while they were on stage.

The hypnotist said, and Rachel has verified, that while under hypnosis, you do not lose your will. You willingly submit to his commands. You would not do something under hypnosis that your moral will would not allow you to do otherwise. You just put yourself under his command, his leadership.

That is similar to our response to Jesus Christ. We never lose control of our will. From the time we are born (at least from the point we recognize we have a will) until the time we die, our will is under our control (barring any mental illnesses). Neither God, Christ, nor the Holy Spirit ever violate that will. It would be a moral atrocity for someone else to violate that will. As Norman Geisler says, “Forced love is rape.”

The first words recorded by Matthew, from the mouth of Jesus, were to John the immerser: “Permit it [His baptism] at this time” (3:15). Notice Jesus is calling on John to submit his will to the Father’s will. According to Mark’s Gospel, the first message from the mouth of the Lord is: “Repent and believe in the gospel” (1:15). Again, He is calling on His audience to submit their will to the Father’s instructions.

In Luke’s account, Jesus, at twelve years old, asks His parents: “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” (2:49). Jesus recognizes His parents’ will and offers the answer that His will was to be about His Father’s business. Once more, according to John’s gospel, the first words from the mouth of Jesus involve man’s will. Two disciples of John, fulfilling his ministry, left him and began to follow Jesus. He asked them, “What do you seek?” Where is your will leading you? “Rabbi, where are you staying?” they asked Him. “Come, and you will see” (1:38-39).

Jesus does not violate our will. He calls us to humbly submit our will to His. When we submit to His call (“Come”), we will “see” what He has in store for us.
