Doubts about Christ
David begins his 13th psalm with these thoughts, illustrating a troubled mind and a heart that doubted: “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? As we have tried to emphasize frequently through this study on doubt, when we have doubts, we need to go to the Great Physician and allow Him to heal the wounds. If faith comes by “hearing the word of God” (Romans 10:17), then faith is also sustained by hearing the Word of God.
Did Jesus know what He was talking about when He attributed the authorship of Genesis to Moses? Did Jesus know what He was talking about when He attributed the authorship of the whole book of Isaiah to that prophet? Did Jesus know what He was talking about when He affirmed the historicity of Jonah swallowed by the big fish? That Adam was the first man and Eve was the first woman?
Do Christians have Jesus wrong? Go back and remind yourself of Who Jesus is. There is no doubt that Jesus was a historical person. Roman historians and Jewish historians mention Jesus. Plus, we have the writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. History. The Bible – the whole Bible, in fact – is grounded in historical events.
Not only are the birth and life of Jesus matters of history but His resurrection is a historical fact. That’s one event that evolutionists, skeptics, and atheists trip over. The tomb was empty and His earliest followers did not venerate the tomb. Is that something early Christians made up? By what stretch of the imagination would these early Christians decide to start telling people that a dead rabbi was the Son of God? Truth is stranger than fiction; man would never believe such a story unless there was clear, irrefutable evidence behind it.
Jesus is still relevant today because He still lives today. Everything we are and do as Christians is related to Jesus Christ. Relative to the plan of salvation, we listen to Jesus. We believe in Jesus. We repent because of Jesus. We confess Jesus. We are baptized into Jesus.
Relative to worship… We sing praises to Jesus and because of Him. We pray through our relationship to Jesus. We give because of Jesus. We study and teach the word because of Jesus. We observe the Lord’s Supper because of Jesus.
Do not doubt Jesus – neither His power, His love, His truth, or His wrath.
