INTRODUCTION: Jesus had just given the parable of watchfulness (Luke 12:35-40). The parable was not clear to Peter. He didn’t know whether or not Jesus meant it just for the twelve or for all (Luke 12:41). Jesus answered Peter indirectly by giving the parable of the faithful and wise steward (Luke 12:42-48).
THE SETTING OF THE PARABLE:
The common practice in the east was for a man to leave his property and goods under the care of a steward during his temporary absence. The steward was expected to be faithful with the master’s goods. The steward who was faithful would be rewarded and exalted (Luke 12:42-44).
The steward who was unfaithful would be surprised at his lord’s coming. It would be at an unexpected hour (Luke 12:45, 46), and further he would have his portion with the unfaithful (Luke 12:46). The servant who knows his mater’s will and makes no preparation for his coming shall be beaten with many stripes (Luke 12:47). The servant who knows not his master’s will and does things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes (Luke 12:48).
The law of Moses required punishment in proportion to the sin (Deut. 25:2-3).

The Lord will come at an unexpected hour (Luke 12:46; Mark 13:32-33). The Lord requires faithfulness on the part of his servants at all times (Luke 16:10, 13; 1 Cor. 4:2). The faithful shall be saved (Matt. 10:32; 25:31-40; Rev. 2:10; 22:14). The Lord will punish the unfaithful according to their productivity (Luke 12:47, 48). The reward and punishment will vary according to the way we meet our responsibilities (Luke 12:47, 48).
Let us use our ability and opportunities. Let us also be faithful to the Lord in all things (Matt. 24:13; Rev. 2:10).
