Relative to sharing the message from God, Jesus promised His apostles that the Holy Spirit would guide them in all truth (John 14:26). Jesus here promises that the Holy Spirit will guide the apostles into all truth. How much truth? All truth.
By the time Jesus’ brother, Jude, writes his letter, he tells us that all truth had been revealed (Jude 3). So, there is no reason for God to perform miracles today. Their purpose has been fulfilled in the complete revelation of the Bible that tells us everything we need to know about God and about Jesus Christ. There is nothing we need to know from God that is not revealed in the Bible. The Bible is God’s final revelation. The Bible is God’s complete revelation. The Bible is God’s permanent revelation. That’s why there is no need for miracles today. Their purpose has been fulfilled.
That’s why we cannot change God’s revelation. That’s why Paul warns us in Gal. 1:6-9 not to change God’s revelation. That’s why John warns us in Rev. 22:18-19 not to change God’s revelation. It has been revealed to us finally, completely, and permanently. So if a man shows up and claims to perform miracles, all we have to do is listen to what he teaches to know the truth. If he doesn’t teach everything that the Bible teaches, exactly as it teaches it, we know the man is a false teacher and is not performing true miracles. The apostle Paul warned the Christians in Thessalonica that Satan performs false miracles (2 Thess. 2:9) through false teachers. It all comes back to the question: What does the man (or woman) teach? Is it consistent with what has already been revealed?
There is also another reason why we know that miracles have ceased and that is this:
1. Consistent with John 14:26, the teaching of the apostles is the foundation on which the church is built. The twelve apostles sit on twelve thrones, judging the “new Israel,” the church (Matt. 19:28).
2. They do that through their teachings in the NT. The church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets (Eph. 2:20).

3. The apostles, and the apostles only, could lay their hands on others and give them miraculous abilities (Acts 8:15-17).
4. So, once the apostles died, the ability to pass on miraculous gifts died with them and, subsequently, when the next generation passed away, then miraculous abilities as a whole passed away.
I’ll share with you one more passage to illustrate this point, and that is 1 Corinthians 13:8-10. “Prophecy.” “Speaking in tongues.” “Knowledge.” These were all miraculous abilities that God used in the first century to share knowledge about Himself. But, when the “perfect” comes, then those avenues by which God shared knowledge of Himself would pass away. The one thing that is the “perfect” knowledge of God is the Bible and it was completely revealed and available for all mankind by the end of the first century, which is consistent with what we’ve already shown.
Miracles in the Bible proved God’s message was true. They strengthen our faith to follow Christ and His Gospel. The complete gospel message, contained in the Bible, fulfill the purpose of miracles.
