In less than two months, the world will experience a royal wedding as Prince Harry of Wales will marry American actress Meghan Markle, May 19th. You might be all excited about this royal wedding and maybe you will watch the wedding on TV. I, for one, if it were up to me, would dissolve the royalty entirely, tell all those people to go get a real job, and save the British tax payers a whole lot of money. I am no fan of human royalty.
But, I am a deep admirer of spiritual royalty. King Jesus means everything to me and you, too, I believe. In fact, because the NT pictures the church of Christ as the bride of Christ, then every time someone obeys the Gospel, then we see a new “wedding ceremony” between that person and Jesus Christ.
Now, let us back up four thousand years… to the time of King David. This is the second psalm (Psa 45), we will study this year (out of six). We see as we study the psalm how Jesus is the spiritual fulfillment of the psalm, that Jesus is the spiritual King and we are grateful that we are His spiritual kingdom.
THE SCENE – 45:1:
Someone once said that a woman is not as beautiful as on her wedding day. When the apostle John, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, was looking for a description of the church of the Lord coming down from heaven, he could not find a more appropriate imagine than of a bride (Rev. 21:2). The psalmist, seeing the bride of the king, broke out in glory, praise, and honor of the King himself and the bride, in verse 1.
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE KING – 45:2-5:
How does the psalmist praise the King? The psalmist praises the King for many things. His beauty, grace on his lips. He is a warrior. His clothing is that of splendor and majesty. In verse 4, we see that He is victorious. He fights for truth, for meekness, for righteousness. His powerful right hand teaches awesome things, fearful things.
THE GLORY OF THE KING – 45:6-9:
In these verses, the psalmist speaks about the glory of the king… The nature of the rule, in the kingdom, is uprightness and righteousness. These two words are often found together and the reign of the Messiah is characterized by these two features.
Observe in verse 7 that the King “loves righteousness.” Parallel with that idea is that he “hates wickedness.” You cannot have one without the other.

A DESCRIPTION OF THE BRIDE – 45:10-12:
Here, we see the blessings of being the King’s bride. In marriage, in general, the bride is to leave her people, “forget” her people, her family and her father’s house (Genesis 2:24) and focus on her husband. The wife needs to feel that she belongs to her husband and he needs to feel that his wife is his “all” from the physical perspective.
In the same way, the Bible teaches that when we “marry” Christ, in becoming Christians, we must leave everything and give ourselves to Christ completely: Luke 9:57-62.
THE GLORY OF THE BRIDE – 45:13-15:
It is possible that the psalmist is picturing the wedding of Solomon, David’s son. Jesus is “one greater than Solomon” (Matt 12:42) and we can see the glory of His bride, the church, in such passages as Ephesians 5:25-27.
CONCLUSION – 45:16-17:
The psalmist is speaking about the blessings of this marriage for generations of children which will follow. The descendants of David sat on his throne, until the coming of Jesus, and some were good and were blessed – if they followed the example of David.
Since we are brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ, you might say that we are “princes” and “princesses” in His kingdom: Rev 1:6; 1 Peter 2:5.
Let us look to our King with the same commitment and look at His bride – the church – with the same feelings of praise gushing from our hearts!
