The God who is to be worshiped

Throughout the Bible, one of the great themes is the desire of godly people to dwell with God, to worship Him, and to know him. These expressed desires of praise and to dwell with Him are the fulfillment of the Lord’s intention for mankind – “to reconcile all things to Himself” (Col. 1:20) and to “know the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom He has sent” (John 17:3).

Both Exodus and 2 Chronicles (temple) gives extensive attention to the tabernacle as the place to worship and meet with God. How many chapters in Genesis deal with the creation? One. How many chapters in Exodus deal with the tabernacle? 25-31 and 35-40 (13). In fact, more is written on the tabernacle than any other subject in the Pentateuch. Why? Because worship is important to God.

The tabernacle shows us two things about God: The Lord is holy. The Lord is king over Israel.

THE LORD IS HOLY:
If you were to do a detailed study of the layout, materials, and workmanship of the tabernacle, you would observe this point – the closer you move from the entrance to the tabernacle, moving east, you more valuable the fabrics and metals would become.

The other tent curtains are less magnificent than the outer veil of the tabernacle which, in turn, is less valuable than the inner curtain that opened into the Holy of Holy places. The greater the materials, the greater the workmanship, the more important the object, and the greater the level of holiness.

THE LORD IS KING OF ISRAEL:
Just like the tabernacle was divided into three areas – the Holy of Holies, the tabernacle, and the outer court, so Mount Sinai was divided into three areas. The top of the mountain where only Moses went to commune with God (19:20); the second area was from the border of the mountain upward, but not including the top. This is where Aaron, his sons, and the elders of Israel were able to go (19:22). The third area was at the base of the mountain where there was an altar of burnt offerings, guarded by a border to prevent the common Israelite from ascending the mountain (19:12-13, 21-24).

The tabernacle is the place from where God continued to exercise his reign over Israel. When Moses entered the tabernacle, it was to learn what God expected from the Israelites (25:22). Finally, what was the one important object located inside the Ark? (25:21). You simply cannot know the Lord without obeying His law. So, it was from the tabernacle that God extended His authority, His sovereignty over the nation of Israel.

Since Israel, by its nature, was to reach out and be witnesses to the nations around them, and they could not be so holy without the Lord’s presence in their midst, so God designed this tabernacle. Through it, God would be among the Israelites, keep them holy as they kept His word, and subsequently the world would know that He is the “Lord their God.”

What implications does this have with the church as the temple of God in the spiritual sense?
