The other word means “to cover,” with the sense that the sin is covered, buried, so that it can never been seen again.
The Greek language also has (at least) two words that carry the idea of forgiveness. One means “to leave behind.” That suggests the sin is something that is put aside, forgotten, and left behind. The other word means “to have grace.” It is a cognate word for “grace,” so that it means “to show someone favor they do not deserve.”
Forgiveness is in the essence of God’s nature. That is, love forgives. Love looks for opportunities to forgive. Love bends over backward to forgive. Love has every intention of forgiving. Sin creates a border wall between each of us (as well as us and God, Isaiah 59:1-2). Forgiveness lifts that border wall and moves it out of the way. Forgiveness covers that wall with a bridge so that the relationship can be restored. Forgiveness chooses to set aside the wall so that it no longer separates. Forgiveness extends love to one on the other side of the wall, even when they created the wall.
