We finish our abbreviated study today on what the Bible teaches on the Holy Spirit. After today, we will have read and studied every text which mentions the Holy Spirit (unless I have overlooked one). We can’t know anything more about the Holy Spirit except what He has revealed of Himself in the Scriptures. Let us be content with what He has revealed, not speculate on what we do not know, believe what we can know, and not make Him say/do things the Bible will not allow us to believe.
1 JOHN
3.24 – We have a relationship with God, we abide in Him and He abides in us, if we keep His commandments. We know this is true because the Holy Spirit has told us it is true and He dwells in us. Of course, the Holy Spirit has revealed this to us in the modern age through His direct guidance of the apostles and prophets in the first century.
4:2, 6, 13 – This series of verses shows the same contrast as we saw in the OT, between one who is led by the Holy Spirit of God and one who is led by his own spirit. If a prophet confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, that prophet is led by the Spirit of God. In verse 6, the apostle John sets his words on the same level as the word of God Himself. If someone is a true follower of God, he will listen to the apostle John. One who is not a true follower of God will not listen to the apostle John. That relationship between a “follower” and the apostles’ words shows whether he is following the “Spirit of truth” or the “spirit of error.”
5:6, 8 – How do we know about Jesus Christ and the significance of His sacrifice? The Holy Spirit testifies about it because He is the “Spirit of Truth.” This is a latter affirmation of Jesus’ words in John 15:26-27. The Holy Spirit and the waters of Jesus’ baptism and the blood of His sacrifice all are in agreement as to the nature, mission, and significance of Jesus Christ. From the beginning (baptism) to the end (sacrifice) of His life, Jesus’s ministry was testified by the Holy Spirit.
Jude
19-20 – The false teachers who were troubling Jude’s audience were “devoid of the Spirit.” Instead, the Christians were to build themselves up, in their holy faith, praying within the realm of the Spirit. Prayer is our spirit communing with the Divine Spirit.
Revelation
1:4, 10 – Both these passages attribute inspiration to the apostle John while he received the revelation on the island of Patmos and encouraged the Christians in the seven churches in Asia Minor. The “seven Spirits” are likely a reference to the complete wisdom / guidance of the Holy Spirit of God.

2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:1, 6, 13, 22 – Seven times in these seven letters, John lets the Christians know that it was the Holy Spirit of God who speaks through him.
4:2, 5 – John is guided by the Holy Spirit in seeing these visions that compose the revelation. This chapter is, of course, the scene of God in His throne room, so we have the Holy Spirit present in heaven. The seven lamp stands are the seven churches (1:20) so that the Holy Spirit here stands in the place or represents the churches who are under His guidance or influence.
5:6 – In the presence of Jesus Christ and worship of Him, we have an image of the Lamb standing with seven eyes which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. So, Jesus knows all that is going on on the earth, particularly as it relates to His own children.
14:13 – This message is specifically said to be by the Holy Spirit of God.
17:3 – Here is another reference to the Holy Spirit in providing these visions to John that he might write what he sees.
21:10 – The same as in 17:3, the Holy Spirit provided these visions for John, this one being a picture of the kingdom consummated in heaven.
22:17 – The invitation to come and drink of the water of life that is free is extended both by humanity, in the person of the bride of Christ (the church), and the Holy Spirit Himself. He is constantly inviting through His word all of mankind to come, obey Him, and receive the treasures He has to offer. It is vital that we get His word into the hands of the lost. He cannot invite if we do not get His invitation into the hearts of those who need to hear it. Spread the seed! Evangelize!
