THE SPIRIT’S ROLE IN THE MESSIAH:
11:2 – The Spirit of the Lord would rest on Who? On the one who would be the “stem/root of Jesse” (vs 1). This is clearly the Holy Spirit and this is clearly a reference to the role of the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Jesus would receive divine wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and godly fear through the Spirit of the Lord. This verse is not specifically quoted in the NT in reference to Jesus fulfilling the idea but we’ll see that 42:1 is.
42:1 – As with our prior text, 11:2, here we see that the Spirit would come over the Messiah and would enable Him to be just and fair with the nations. This text is quoted by Matthew in 12:18-21. Because we have dealt with it here, we will not consider it when we get to Matthew’s gospel.
61:1 – This is the Messiah speaking, showing that the Messiah would be anointed by the Holy Spirit, with the Holy Spirit. It was the offices of prophet, priest, and king which were anointed in the Old Testament times. Here, it is not oil that anoints the Messiah but the Holy Spirit of Jehovah God. Empowered by the Spirit, the Messiah will bring “good news” (the Gospel) to the afflicted and teach and preach liberty and freedom from sin.
This text, of course, is quoted in the NT, by Jesus Himself, actually, when He returns to His hometown of Nazareth in Luke 4:18-19. We have three prophecies here, then, of the Messiah being anointed, guided, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Jesus certainly fulfilled those prophecies and proved that He did.
THE FAITHFUL REMNANT:
32:15 – It appears to me that Isaiah 32 looks forward to the Messianic age as 32:1 refers to a king who will reign righteously and His princes will rule justly. There seem to be a number of references to the ideal life the faithful will live once that king arrives. In verse 3, they will discern truth and they will speak clearly.

So, in verse 9, Isaiah calls on the noble women to “hear” his voice and “give ear” (“obey”) his word. Before the king comes, “the palace will be abandoned and the populated city will be forsaken” (vs 14) until the Spirit is “poured out” (ערה) upon us from on high and the wilderness becomes a fertile field.
When that happens, justice will dwell in the wilderness, righteousness will abide in the fertile field and “righteousness” is listed three times in two verses (16-17).
Now, we are most familiar with the idea of the Holy Spirit being poured out from heaven in Acts 2 where Peter quotes Joel 2 (the verbs “pour out” are different between Isa. 32 and Joel 2). We’ll look at Joel 2 in a week or so but here, Isaiah mentions the Spirit being poured out.
44:3 – This text is another which shows that Israel, future generations, would receive the Holy Spirit so that they would no longer be “thirsty” spiritually. He would bring them living water. This verb “pour out” is yet another verb from the 32:15 passage (and the Joel 2 passage) – יצק – but the idea is the same. The Holy Spirit will come on the nation of Israel. But when will have to wait for future prophecies…
These are all the verses which mention the Spirit of God in the prophecy of Isaiah.
