While Romans 8 has the densest concentration of references to the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures, the chapter is not about the Holy Spirit. It is, rather, about the great benefits that one has, being in Christ Jesus. There is no “condemnation” to those in Christ (8:1).
Christians have their mind set on the Spirit (8:5) who gave us the law of life (8:2). As such, Christians walk according to the Spirit (8:14). That dense concentration of references to the Spirit in Romans 8 (heaviest through verse 16) comes to an end at verses 26-27.
First, let’s see the contrast… In verse 19, Paul writes that the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. The creation has been subject to futility (vs 20) and corruption (vs 21). So, the creation groans (vs 22). Yet, even Christians groan within ourselves, waiting for the redemption of our bodies, of which the Holy Spirit is the downpayment (vs 23).
Which brings us to verses 26-27. Groaning, we are weak. So the Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. If we have utterings that cannot be verbalized, the Holy Spirit takes our thoughts to the Father and intercedes for us, always according to the will of the Father. We cannot ask or expect the Holy Spirit to do something outside of the will of the Father.
Another blessing that belongs to Christians is the promise that God will work all things together in our best interests (vs 28), for those who love God and are called in Jesus Christ. Then, Paul gives a catena of blessings that belong to Christians, moving from being “called,” to predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ, to justification and glorification (vs 30). All of that belongs to the one who is in Jesus Christ!

With all of these blessings “in our corner,” Paul puts this question to His audience: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Well, absolutely no one. God spared no expense, including the life of His Son, to bring us to glory (vs 32). Will He not, therefore, freely give us whatever we need? No one can bring a charge of evil against God’s elect because He is the one who justifies. No one can condemn God’s elect because Christ died for us. He was raised for us. He sits at God’s right hand, for us. He intercedes for us.
With our Advocate being so close to the Father, then who can separate us from the love of the Father for all those in Christ Jesus? Both verse 35 and verses 38-39 give another catena of elements, or factors, in life that have no power to pull us away from God, if we are in Jesus Christ.
It is in the nature of life, as Paul quotes from Psalm 44:22, that God’s followers are “put to death all day long” and are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet, in Christ Jesus, not only do we conquer all these elements and factors working against us, but we overwhelmingly conquer (vs 37; NASV)!
What a blessing and a joy to be in Jesus Christ!
Paul Holland
