The Power of the Printed Page

I wrote an article for a brotherhood publication out of Alabama, Vigil, which was run in October, 1998. It was entitled, “There’s Trouble in the Church,” giving suggestions on how to handle church problems in a scriptural manner. At least one church in western Kentucky reprinted the article in their church bulletin but guess where else it went?

Nearly six months later, March 8, 1999, I received a letter from a brother Roger Wanasen in Querzon City, Philippines. The Philippines? He wrote, “Your article is timely here in our country because of what’s happening here. I am happy to borrow your good suggestion how [sic] to solve the controversy.”

The power of the printed page. Humans read. When the printing press was invented, the market was flooded with books. Bookstores were everywhere – now they are on the internet. “The writing of many books is endless,” wrote the wise man in Ecclesiastes 12:12. Magazines are the same way. Perhaps God designed humans with a built-in desire to read. He sure put His stamp of approval on the printed page. Paul wrote the church in Colossae: “And when this letter is read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and you, for your part read my letter that is coming from Laodicea” (4:16).

The printed page can be used for good or for evil. Hitler used the printed page to spread His propaganda. Enemies of Christ have tried to use the printed page to hurt His influence. Paul’s enemies tried to use the printed page to curtail his influence in Thessalonica (2 Thess. 2:2).

It has also been used for much good. The Bible itself illustrates the point. “Democratic beliefs in equality, responsibility and care for the weak owe much to Jesus’ lessons in brotherhood and love” (World Book Encyclopedia). Letters have often been used to encourage and build up fellow Christians. The Hebrew writer says, “I urge you, brethren, bear with this word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly” (13:22).

Here is my point – send cards. Write short letters of encouragement to the sick, shut-ins, weak Christians, those who have missed worship services. The printed page can be used in other ways. We have postcards that can be mailed to relatives and friends advertising VBS, etc. When you pay your bills – if you do not pay them on-line – put a good tract in the envelope with your payment. We have several good tracts available. Many souls have been led to Christ through a well-written tract on a particular subject.

Follow Christ’s example – use the power of the printed page.
