God said to Solomon, “Ask what I shall give you” (1 Kings 3:5). His desire was for wisdom to rightly govern the people. Upon that righteous request God grants Solomon more wisdom than any man had ever had and ever would have in the future (see verse 12).
You may recall the demonstration of the wisdom that follows. Two women are living in the same home and both have had babies within days of each other. One baby dies during the night and his mother swaps him for the living baby. The two women come to Solomon both claiming to be the living babies’ mother. Solomon solves the dilemma by requesting that a sword be brought to him so the baby can be divided and shared by both women. His wisdom causes the true mother to plead that the baby be given to the other woman so he will live. This clearly revealed the true mother and caused the multitudes to be in awe of Solomon’s wisdom. Later, the Queen of Sheba would make a long journey to visit Solomon to see his wisdom first hand. Her conclusion about the wisdom (and riches) of Solomon was, “the half was not told me” (1 Kings 10:17).
Consider now the book of Proverbs which was written by Solomon, the wisest man in the world. Without a doubt, this book is the greatest compilation of wisdom for everyday life that man has ever known. Solomon uses his gift of wisdom to reveal amazing and practical truths about numerous subjects including marriage, relationships, adultery, righteousness, discipline, money, pride, alcohol, speech, and a host of others.
