Traditions. I like traditions.

A Call to Remember
Deut. 8:2-3

My mom cooked hamburgers and fries every Saturday. My older brother and I use to watch Star Trek while mom cooked lunch. We had to take turns setting the table and I would set the table during the commercials and generally, Mom would schedule it that lunch would be served after Star Trek was over. I do not ever remember eating a meal while watching TV. Our family watched plenty of TV but never while we were eating.

Thanksgiving is a time to remember. We are thankful because we remember… From time to time in my funeral services, I mention what a great blessing it is for human beings to have the ability to remember, to recall happy times in our past.

God has also called on His people to remember and I want us to focus on that in our study: Deut. 8:7-20.

LET US REMEMBER OUR BLESSINGS – 8:7-9:

The word “land” is used in Deut 183 times! Sometimes the word refers to other nations but most of the time, it refers to the Promised Land as a gift from God to the people of Israel. God needs a nation through whom He can send Jesus into the world. God chose Abraham and his family because Abraham was a faithful obedient man. When God first talked to Abraham in Gen. 12:1, God told Abraham He was going to lead Abraham to a “land.” In the next chapter, in Gen. 13:15, God told Abraham that he was standing in the land, all the land he could see, N, S, E, W, was going to be given to him and his family.

Let us remember from this text to remember, to count our blessings and appreciate them all.

LET US REMEMBER TO BLESS THE LORD – 8:10:

If you remember your blessings, then you’ll remember to bless the Lord for your blessings. To “bless” the Lord here is to honor the Lord for His blessings. It carries the idea of thanking the Lord, even worshiping the Lord for His blessings.

LET US REMEMBER TO OBEY THE LORD’S COMMANDMENTS – 8:11-13:

Don’t think that your blessings mean you don’t have to obey God anymore, that you can now make up your own definition of Christianity and not submit to the Lord’s commandments.

Speaking of God’s commandments… Moses uses the word forty-three times! Forty-three times and never in a negative sense. People today hate to hear the idea that we must give special attention to God’s commandments, to Christ’s commandments, but the Bible never talks about God’s commandments in a negative way. We must obey God’s commandments. Israel did not deserve the promised land but they had better obey God’s commandments if they wanted to enjoy the promised land!

LET US REMEMBER TO BE HUMBLE – 8:14-16:

You cannot be humble and not obey Christ’s commandments. You also cannot obey Christ’s commands and not be humble because one of His commandments is: Be humble. Put God’s commandments above your own desires and to a certain degree, you and I need to put other people’s interests ahead of our own. That, family, is humility.

Pride is no laughing matter, so let us remember to be humble, especially toward God and toward our fellowman since this is a commandment of Jesus Christ: Phil. 2:3-4.

LET US REMEMBER THE LORD OUR GOD – 8:17-20:

Finally, in order to summarize this whole text and our message, we state that we simply need to remember the Lord our God.

Verse 17 – Don’t forget to keep your heart right in the eyes of God.

Verse 18 – Don’t forget as you earn your paycheck each week which allows you to enjoy thanksgiving that the source of your blessings is God Himself.

Verse 19 – Don’t forget that idolatry is and always has been sin against God.

Verse 20 – Don’t forget to listen to the Lord God.

As you carry a “thanksgiving” heart with you into the future, remember your blessings, the Lord, obedience, and humility toward God.
