We are not Simply Chemical Machines

Simon Sinek has written a few books on leadership. Rachel picked up one at the Detroit airport last year, Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t. While it is largely a good book, Sinek is thoroughly evolutionistic in his thinking and writing. He does mention “God” once or twice and he can’t help but talk about humans being “designed.” But, as evolutionists are almost always self-contradictory, Sinek believes we are “designed” by evolution.

In this particular book, Sinek writes to encourage companies and other organizations to build a “team” mentality. As a part of his discussion, he discusses a number of hormones in human beings that are stimulated by certain actions: endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and cortisol. Sinek’s view is that we perform behaviors because these behaviors stimulate the production of these hormones, which make us feel good. By the same token, we should perform certain behaviors – “team building” – in order to stimulate these hormones in others, make them feel good, and then they’ll be a part of our team.

For example, Sinek writes: “Serotonin boots our self-confidence and inspires us to help those who work for us and make proud those for whom we work. Oxytocin relieves stress, increases our interest in our work and improves our cognitive abilities, making us better able to solve complex problems. It boosts our immune systems, lowers blood pressure, increases our libido and actually lessons our cravings and addictions. And best of all, it inspires us to work together” (75).

I have no doubt that the body’s hormones interact with each other, with the body as a whole, and with the mind in ways I do not understand. I’m sure that specialists understand the connection much better than I do. But, I’m also sure that there is much that specialists will not understand, especially if they persist in leaving God out.

The Scriptures put an emphasis on what we think, based on what we believe, which leads to better, more God-like behavior. Paul writes in Romans 12:2: “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” This is a personal choice – to change your way of thinking. Again, in 2 Corinthians 10:5, the apostle challenges: “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”

God has put humans in charge of our own thinking. When we change our thinking, we change our feelings, and we change our behavior. The hormones will take care of themselves. We are more than chemical machines. Beginning this Friday, we’ll start a three-month series on how to have a new way of thinking. This series is especially designed to help us think our way out of discouragement and depression. The first such devotional will be this Friday.
