What is integrity?

Integrity

“Integrity” is defined as “the quality or state of being complete; unbroken condition; wholeness; entirety.” It comes from the Late Middle English word integrite which, in turn, comes from the Latin word integritas or integer. You mathematicians will recognize the word “integer.” Its Latin word meant “untouched, whole, entire.” An integer is, mathematically, any whole number whether positive or negative. It is untouched, entire.

Bismark Mensah, an immigrant from Ghana, made $9.09 an hour at Walmart in Federal Way, Washington. Nearly a year ago, Mensah was assisting a woman in loading her groceries. As she drove away, he noticed that she had dropped an envelope. When he looked inside, it contained $20,000 in cash! He would have had to work 2,200 hours – over year when you consider deductions – to earn that much money!

The owner, Leona Wisdom, was saving the money to make a down payment on a house. Yet, Mensah flagged her down and gave the money back. Ms. Wisdom offered him a reward – at least a date with her daughter! – but he turned her down.

But Mensah was rewarded. Walmart named him the winner of their 2013 “Integrity in Action” award and promoted him to a full-time position.

He should also inspire us to think of others before ourselves. “It is more blessed to give [even give back] than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

Finally, Bismark Mensah may be a person of integrity, but he is not complete until he is complete in Christ. Integrity alone does not wash away sins. The Hebrew writer says that we have come “to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect” (12:23).

Paul tells us that is the reason why he preached Christ: “To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature [“complete” – NASV] in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me” (Colossians 1:27-29).

Whatever virtues we may have outside of Christ, we will not be – indeed, cannot be – complete until we are complete, whole in Christ.
