What is sin?

Sermon outline on the hymn “Just As I Am”

Mt. 22:12 – READ
“Just as I am.”  We sing:  “Without one plea.”
1)    Rom. 3:19 – READ
2)    Every single person, when brought fact to face with his sin, will be completely speechless.
3)    This is a really remarkable verse when we consider the comprehensives of the promise.
4)    Sin is so serious Isa. 59:2 God says it “separates” people from God.
5)    On earth men come up with a lot of excuses for sin and sometimes people accept these excuses.
6)    Man has, as we sing in the second stanza of our hymn, a “dark blot” on his “soul.”
7)    This “blot” is the problem of sin and this blot can be cleansed in only one way.
8)    Our hymn speaks of just “one dark blot” but this does not mean man is guilty of just one sin.
9)    Jas. 3:2 says “in many things we ALL stumble.”
10)    We need only one stain on our eternal spirit to be separated from God.
11)    If we have opened your hymn books to this song take note of the fifth stanza.
12)    There is where we find words like “poor, wretched, blind.”
13)    Those who have not had their sins forgiven are in a wretched condition and they may not know it.
14)    The words “poor, wretched, and blind” are three descriptions of the unsaved.
15)    The word “sight’ stands in contrast to the word “blind.”
16)    The word “riches” stands in contrast to the word “wretched.”
17)    “Healing of the mind” is the opposite of being “blind.”
18)    Living as an unsaved person is the worst way to experience life.
19)    Our hymn seems to talk about the non-Christian way of life as the years go by.

MAN’S CONDITION WITHOUT CHRIST AND THE GOSPEL IS ONE OF MISERY.  ALL WHO ARE UNSAVED DO NOT HAVE “ONE PLEA” IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT IF THEY TRY TO MAKE THINGS WORK ON THEIR OWN.
a)    Thankfully there is some help.
b)    Going back to the first line of our hymn – “thy blood was shed.”
c)    Over the years a lot of blood has been shed.
d)    Jn. 19:34 says a soldier pierced the side of Jesus Christ and out came blood and water.
e)    Rom. 5:9 says man can be “justified” by Jesus’ blood.
2)    Jesus’ blood “can cleanse from each spot.”
a)    John said Christ’s blood cleanses from “all unrighteousness” (1 Jn. 1:7).
b)    Jn. 3:16 says God “so loved the world” that “He gave His only begotten Son.”
3)    Our hymn says God’s love is “unknown” and has “broken every barrier down”.
AS WE SING IN OUR HYMN, THOU BIDD’ST ME TO COME.”  WE COME, BECAUSE AS WE SING, “THEY PROMISE I BELIEVE” AND “ALL I NEED, IN THEE I FIND.”

a)    When we sing these words do we really mean what we sing?
b)    Is it actually true that “all I need in thee I find?”
c)    God offers the things we need in this life and in eternity.
2)    Several times we sing, “I come, I come.”
3)    These words describe life in the here and now.
4)    Are we someone who truly believes?
5)    Do we believe in Jesus and what He did?
