What Should I Do?

“How can we know God’s will for my life?” I am not talking about how to worship, become a Christian, nor other matters to which we have a command or example. How can we know what God wants us to do in our individual lives? Any conscientious child of God wants to make decisions based on the Lord’s will. Joshua tried a fleece. The High Priest would use the Urim and Thummim. Some in the Bible cast lots. How do we know what God’s will is when we are contemplating dating or marrying someone, choosing a job or career, making financial decisions, or other life decisions?

First, there are the obvious. One must pray and read God’s word. He or she must communicate with the Lord. He speaks to us through His Word. By reading it, we can learn insights on the character He desires us to have (I Tim. 3:16-17; Psa. 119:105; Josh. 1:8). Likewise, the Bible says we communicate our needs to God through prayer (James 1:5-8; Mt. 7:7-11).

Second, there is the not-so-obvious. No matter how much you pray, and no matter how much you read, you will not find a verse on what job you are to take. So, how can one know what God’s will? Simple. We must know God! Let me explain it this way. If I am going to bring supper home, I could choose one of several places. However, if I want to please my wife, Melody, I know I should not choose sushi, steak, ribs, nor seafood. I could pick pizza, Mexican, Italian, or Chik-Fil-A. Any of those would be fine with her and would be up to my discretion. How do I know this? By spending time with her, having conversations with her, and learning all I can about her, I know my wife. By knowing her, I know how to make decisions that will be pleasing to her.

The same is true with our Lord. The more I know about Him, grow in my relationship with Him, and am a student of Him, the easier it is for me to know the decisions that will be pleasing to Him. It could be there are still multiple options left open. In that case, there is a decision to be made, yes. However, the decision is then made based on my preferences – but first narrowed down to only those that are pleasing to God.

Proverbs 3:5-8 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body And refreshment to your bones.” If we commit to truly knowing the Lord and growing our relationship with Him, then we can rest assured He will open up doors and close doors along the way. Additionally, we can know what doors to walk through based first on what He would have us to do.
