What women can do in the church

The Feminine Side of the Church

Women have often been overlooked and/or ignored or perhaps even underestimated. Someone said, “Sure, Fred Astaire was a great dancer, but remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred did except she did it backwards and in high heels.”

But women are irreplaceable. Someone once asked Mark Twain, “In a world without women, what would men become?” “Scarce, Sir,” Twain answered, “Mighty scarce.”

GOD USED GREAT WOMEN IN THE OT TO FULFILL HIS PURPOSES:

In Genesis 2:22-24, God made Adam and Eve equal. From that day and for the last many millennium, the beauty and charm of God’s woman has captured the heart of man.

What about Noah’s wife? Abraham’s wife, Sarah: what she went through. Her faith was tested just as surely as Abraham’s. There are lots of women behind the scenes that surely helped the men accomplish what they accomplished. When God does bring in a woman to fulfill a major role in His work, He does so, not because that is His last resort, but because that woman is the best individual at that time for that work.

GOD USES GREAT WOMEN IN THE NT:

The Gospel of Luke has been called the “Gospel of women” because Luke presents so many women who were involved in the earthly ministry of Jesus: Luke 8:1-3. These women served Jesus with their hands and with their finances. They followed Jesus where He went. They followed the Via Dolorossa – the way of the cross – right up to Golgotha. They were the last at the cross and the first at the empty tomb. The women were the first to hear the Gospel message: “He is not here! He has risen!”

The power of women is the power that builds a great family and a great church.

Now, what can women do in the work of the church?

    1. Women can lead in keeping the unity of the church.

    2. Women can do a great work in teaching children.

    4. Women can lead in the work of visitation.

    5. Women take the lead in teaching other women (Titus 2:3-5).

    6. Women can lead the way in soul-winning (Acts 18:2, 18, 26; Phil. 4:3).

    7. Women take the lead in hospitality (Rom. 12:13).

    8. Women lead in the spiritual life and having devoted lives.

    9. Women lead in seeing that visitors to worship are warmly received.

    10. Women lead in encouragement.

BUT GOD HAS PUT A LIMITATION ON WHAT WOMEN MAY DO:

1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1 Timothy 2:11-12 are the two basic texts. Let us observe that these texts have to do with the role of men versus women, not our value or importance to God (Gal. 3:28). Additionally, let us simply point out here that efforts to limit these passages to the first century culture are not substantive but shallow efforts to accommodate modern culture.

Our women, serving the Lord with their own talents, will strengthen the work of the Lord’s church.
