Dean Nelson wrote a column last summer on USAToday.com with the title “Why Certainty about God is Overrated.” He began and ended his column talking about Sir John Polkinghorne. Dr. Polkinghorne explained the existence of quarks and gluons while teaching physics at Cambridge University. Polkinghorne also believes in God. So much for scientists who do not believe in God! Dr. Polkinghorne has, in fact, written some 30 books dealing with science and faith. “But he doesn’t really know anything,” writes Nelson.
Polkinghorne doesn’t know for sure there is a God, Nelson informs us. But, he lives his life as if there is. Nothing else explains the evidence. A year prior, Nelson took Polkinghorne to the Creation Museum in California. As they looked at what Nelson called the “hall dedicated to certainty,” they were stunned that someone would/could be so certain about anything.
A six-day, 24 hour creation? I’m not sure. A literal Adam and Eve? I’m not sure. Darwin and Hitler both genetic enginneers? I’m not sure. Evolution is a hoax? I’m not sure. No death until Adam and Eve’s sin? I’m not sure. As a snide remark, Nelson gives this parenthetical expression: “Apparently even animals lived forever before the humans at the apple.” To which Polkinhorne reportedly replied: “The Bible may not have a record of it, but there is plenty of evidence in the fossil record.”
The Bible, in fact, has a lot to say about certainty and knowledge. The word “know” or a related word is used well over 1,500 times in the Bible! Does God give us enough information to be certain? Yes, indeed.
Humans, out of our self-important arrogance, like to think things are more complicated than they really are. They are not. Either mind exists eternally or matter does. Science shows that matter is not eternal. Mind, therefore, is.

The Bible was either written by divinely-inspired authors or human-only authors. No bad man wrote the Bible. Bad men, by their nature, do not condemn themselves. They write the rules to justify themselves. Good men did not write the Bible. They would not have lied. Of course, no group of 40 men from a time-span of 1,400 years could have written such an intricately-woven fully united story as the Bible is.
With the Bible proven to be a historically reliable document, and Jesus being a historical person, the resurrection and all the other miracles performed by Jesus prove that He is who He claimed to be. I am certain of that. I am certain of it because that is where all the evidence points. There is no glory, no reward, no prizes, no joy in being pointlessly agnostic. John wrote: “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30-31).”
