Why do you worship? Why? Let me present one reason for our worship. Let’s take a look at Luke 7:36-50.
WE HAVE BEEN AND ARE SINNERS – 7:36-37:
Jesus ate both with tax collectors and sinners but He wants all men to be saved so He was willing to accept invitations to eat with the religious leaders as well – the Pharisees.
While sitting at the meal, a woman comes in – identified as a “sinner”. Look at verse 34 – Jesus referred to Himself as a “friend of sinners.”
HER ACTS OF “WORSHIP” – 7:38:
Observe both the heart and the hands in these acts of worship – She is weeping. She wipes the feet of Jesus with her hair. She kisses his feet. She anoints Him with perfume.
Why does she respond this way? Among other reasons, perhaps, in Luke’s Gospel, “forgiveness” is a key term of Jesus’ ministry and message: 1:77; 3:3; chapter 5; 6:37; 23:34; 24:47.
NO ONE DESERVES TO TOUCH JESUS – 7:39:
This Pharisee thought within himself that if Jesus had been a prophet, he would have known what sort of person she was – a “sinner”! Jesus is holy; God is holy – dwelling now in unapproachable light – 1 Timothy 6:16. If the Pharisee had known truly who was in his house, he would not have felt comfortable being in His presence – like Peter falling at the feet of Jesus (Luke 5:8).
A PARABLE ABOUT OF GOD’S GRACE – 7:40-43:
The moneylender had two debtors. One owed 500 denarii – 500 days’ wages – This would be about 1 ¼ year’s wages; another owed 50 denarii – 50 days’ wages – This would be about two months’ wages. They could not pay so he graciously forgave them both.

Simon gave Him no water for His feet. Simon did not even greet Him with a kiss. Simon did not anoint His head with oil. Jesus was a guest in the house of Simon but not the supreme guest. He was tolerated & patronized, but not worshiped.
WHY WE WORSHIP – 7:47:
Her sins – many – have been forgiven – she loved much. He who is forgiven little worships little. The bottom line is worship is our response to God’s grace. This idea also reflects our worship.
Prayer is recognizing God’s grace in our daily lives;
Singing is praising God for His grace;
The Lord’s Supper honors God for His gift of grace;
Giving is an act of faith by which we trust God’s grace to provide;
Bible study is meditating on the Word of His grace (Acts 20:32).
THE RESULT OF WORSHIP – 7:48-50:
First, Jesus forgives her sins. Our relationship with God snowballs. We come to him for forgiveness and He gives it to us. Then we worship Him and we find more strength and more grace and more forgiveness. So, Jesus turns to the woman, saying – “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Her faith had led her to Jesus, to forgiveness, to worship, to peace.
