Doubt is the theme for our Friday Daily Droplets for the next few months. We are dealing with the existence of evil and suffering and why God has allowed such intense, seemingly purposeless suffering to exist. We are guided by the word of God to understand that in order for God to save us, He must develop us into the image of Christ (see Colossians 3:10, for example).
A part of that development includes learning to choose the good over the evil. Adam and Eve made the wrong choice and brought sin into the world and death through sin, as Paul says in Romans 5:12. What broad category of suffering is not a result of either our own sin, someone else’s sin or the changes brought on the world through the flood of Noah’s day? Not very much. Sometimes we suffer due to carelessness or ignorance and sometimes suffering is discipline from our loving Father in heaven (Heb. 12:4-11). But, largely, suffering exists because man has made (and continues to make) evil choices.
God commands man to love God with all of his mind (Matthew 22:37-38). So, God created this world to challenge man mentally or intellectually. We are here, in a sense, to learn. All of life is an education; certainly not book-knowledge but knowledge of life. How to improve the lives of one another. Let’s not forget the basic purpose of life is to become a child of God.
Part of becoming a child of God is learning to serve our fellowman, being self-less. The suffering of others allows us an opportunity to grow in love and compassion for others (1 Thess. 3:11-13). Remember that Jesus learned obedience through the things that He suffered (Hebrews 5:8-9). How can it be true for Him and not for us?
So, this world, to be the ideal environment to make us into the image of Christ must teach us:

There will be no change of mind nor change of location once we cross from the physical world into the spiritual world. At the same time, this life is insignificant when compared to the joys and blessings experienced in the life to come, the ideal and perfect world (2 Cor. 4:16ff).
No, this is not the ideal world. It does have evil in it. God wants to defeat evil and God can defeat evil. Since evil is not yet defeated, we know there is a better world coming in which evil cannot exist (Rev. 21:4). Let us choose to live that we might enjoy that world.
