1)    These are not the only two things required for the new birth.
2)    What did Jesus mean by “water” and “Spirit”
i)    In Eph. 5:25-26 Paul used the same imagery as Jesus did with Nicodemus.
ii)    In Eph. 5:25-26 Paul spoke of the “washing of water with the word.”
iii)    The “washing of water” is exactly parallel with the word “water” in Jn. 3:5.
b)    The “word” in Eph. 5:26 is parallel with the word “spirit” in Jn. 3:5.
3)    People learn about the new birth through the word of God; God’s word was given by the Holy Spirit.
4)    When the Spirit’s word convicts a person of sin he wants to be “washed” with water.
5)    This “washing” in Eph. 5 or the “water” in Jn. 3 is the final step in the new birth process.
6)    Paul also spoke of this point a few books later in Tit. 3:5.
a)    The Holy Spirit needs to “renew” sinners.
b)    The Holy Spirit gave the word of God which is the “power to salvation” (Rom. 1:16).
c)    Jesus compared the Spirit’s word to a “seed” in Mt. 13, Mk. 4, and Lk. 8.
d)    This seed (word) is planted in a sinner’s heart and it begins to grow.
7)    After people hear the word like those on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:37), there is the water of Jn. 3:5.
8)    This water or washing is the “baptism that allows us to have our sins forgiven” (Acts 2:38).
